I have successfully trained and upskilled over 80 previously disadvantaged and unemployed youth in South African townships in the art of creating public mosaic art.
Collaborating closely with local councils and managing project budgets of up to £40K, these community initiatives resulted in mosaics adoring the City of Cape Town's head quarters, community housing developments, street art, several bespoke park benches and more. The large-scale mosaics beautify communities, transforming public spaces into vibrant works of art.
The projects not only provided employment opportunities but has also instilled a profound sense of pride and belonging in these young artists, empowering them to contribute positively to their environments.
More recently, I have had the privilege of tutoring two "12-Week Fundamentals of Mosaic" workshops with the supported men & women from Helping Hands Community Project in Leamington Spa. This initiative was designed to immerse the charity's service users in the timeless art of mosaic, providing a strong foundation in both technique and creativity. Throughout the course, participants explored various opus techniques, learning how to meticulously cut and shape tiles to create a natural flow within their designs.
Using a variety of tools and tile formats, they developed precision and confidence in their craftsmanship. The workshop covered the direct method of mosaic application, guiding students through the intricacies of placement and composition. Additionally, participants mastered grouting techniques to enhance and complete their pieces. With a focus on both skill and artistic expression, this workshop took place in a supportive and safe environment, encouraging learners to experiment, refine their techniques, and bring their mosaic visions to life.
